Winter Solstice, Earth and Sky, Light and Darkness

The winter solstice comes at exactly 11:28 am on Monday, December 21. As the shortest day in the year, it marks the end of the past year and the beginning of illumination as associated with a new cycle. In old religions, the new cycle was represented by the display of an evergreen tree, and the old cycle was released for renewal with the burning of the Yule Log.
At the time of the winter solstice, the energy is deep in the earth. Sun and Saturn move into Capricorn, an earth sign, on the day of the solstice. The solstice also acts an open door for spiritual energies, and this opportunity to shift upward is reflected by the conjunction (closeness) of Sun, Venus, and Saturn with Galactic Center, the cosmic point in the Milky Way. In this way, earth and sky intermingle.
The emphasis on earth urges us to find our purpose, solidify and/or change the structures in life, and create spiritual desires in physical form. Aspects with Galactic Center transmit new energies, thoughts, and light for expanding our connection with the inner self. (Of course, these types of change develop from our inner work.)
Sun (outer self), Saturn (karma/limitation), and Pluto (transformation) are placed in earth signs, emphasizing the need to translate the dreams of the heart into physical form. (Saturn in Capricorn can help in finding and creating our “mission”.) Moon (inner self) is placed in Aquarius, an air sign that helps with clarity of thought and opening to New Age ideals.

Mercury (communication, thought) is retrograde in Sagittarius. In the past weeks, it’s added confusion, misunderstandings, and a cloudiness to daily life. Fortunately, it moves direct on Dec. 22, bringing clarity and forward motion.

Venus (love, material possessions) sits in Sagittarius, a fire sign, which warms the heart. It can uplift the spirits and renew hope in the area of love and material possessions. Venus conjuncts Saturn (karma, limitation), and this can bring old patterns and limiting thoughts to the surface, but it also conjuncts Galactic Center. The conjunction with Galactic Center can give new information and methods about love and relationships, which supersede old patterns and beliefs.

Mars (male, physical energy, assertion) conjuncts Jupiter (good fortune, expansion), aiding with work and physical activities. Mars’ positive involvement with Jupiter can bring good fortune with both work and physicality. Mars and Jupiter trine Neptune (illusion, mysticism) in Pisces, which aids creativity, sensitivity, and gives courage for self-expression. (The aspect can bestow flowing emotions for creativity and success.)

Jupiter (expansion, good fortune) in Scorpio trines Neptune (illusion/mysticism)  in Pisces. It’s a wonderful aspect, which can amplify hopefulness, imagination, and the realization that wealth and spirituality can intermingle successfully with personal growth. It intensifies our desire for the spiritual quest and creativity.

Saturn will remain in Capricorn for the next three years. Saturn rules Capricorn; it is the planet of karma and limitation. Karma limits our sphere of activity. We are limited to repeating events over and over until we master a certain situation (karma). Saturn is also the taskmaster that eventually frees us. When we overcome our karma (or energetic pattern) through hard work, we achieve success or entry into another sphere or higher sphere of existence.

Sun, Venus, and Saturn form beautiful trines with Uranus (quantum field, new age). If we’re open, it’s possible to receive innovative concepts, new thoughts, and original ways to live life in the outer world (Sun), love life (Venus), and by recreating the lessons of time (Saturn=karma, time) in a new form.

Uranus square Pluto appears for this last winter season. For five years, the square pulled us into the darkness of the unknown—our personal darkness and global darkness. Hopefully, the light cast by our efforts dissipated much of the old world energies. (Next year, Uranus will move into Taurus, an earth year, and we will begin rebuilding our world in the physical form.)

The mixture of shadow and light in this chart is a bit puzzling. We can solve it – and move to a higher level – by listening to our heart and envisioning our desires. In this place, everything changes and moves into a higher paradigm.

Tips:

  1. Sun and Saturn in Capricorn emphasize making life work in the material and bringing ambitions to fruition. If an ambition (desire) comes from the soul, it requires two levels of work. The first comes from inner connection and intuition; the second level means taking concrete action in the physical world—and learning from the experience.
  2. Venus in Sagittarius can uplift us in love. It can renew our hope and faith in the goodness of the world. Jupiter’s (expansion, growth) trine with Neptune soothes emotion, enhances creativity, and lightens our feelings about the world.
  3. Life feels a bit cloudy and confusing with Mercury in retrograde. It will take a few days before we feel the clarity of Mercury direct, but it’s almost here.
  4. The answers are waiting with planets in conjunction with Galactic Center and Uranus. We simply have to take time to receive them.
