Planetary Change: Halloween’s Blue Moon

When the veil opens on Halloween, the Full Blue Moon appears. Full Moons are intense, and it’s particularly true in this case.  The chart presents odd aspects such as Sun (life) in opposition to Uranus (sudden change, quantum field) and Moon (emotions) conjunct Uranus. Uranus can act as a wild card, causing emotions and thoughts to suddenly change. Conversely, it can give brilliance and sudden insights into universal truths. It’s a strange forecast with energy moving in many directions, which is fitting for Halloween.

The Full Moon focuses on feminine energy with Sun in Scorpio, a water sign, and Moon in Taurus, an earth sign.  Water and earth signs are feminine and receptive, and they urge acknowledging emotion, finding understanding of internal states, and creating change in the physical world. Sun in Scorpio heightens intensity, intuition, and emotion. Moon in Taurus, an earth sign, is stabilizing and grounding.

Sun (life) in opposition to Uranus (sudden change, quantum field) can cause nervousness, tension, or irritation. It can also bring about sudden reactions and impulsiveness. Moon (emotion) conjuncts (close to) Uranus adds electrical energy and volatile emotions. With Moon and Uranus placed in Taurus, an earth sign, it’s possible to turn to grounding, exercise, and meditation to calm nervous energy and focus emotion.

Sun trines Neptune (mysticism, illusion), and it’s a beautiful placement, which can bring quiet contemplation and deeper understanding of the spiritual world. It can also quiet emotion and increase feelings of peacefulness. It opens the soul to receive intimations from the Divine.

Part of energetic work involves changing our perception when we feel a particular planetary or karmic influence. We accomplish this by moving into a higher level of life (and light.) For many of us, the full moon awakens subtle energies, which encourages our inner aspirations. The trick is to continue embracing them—regardless of the sensations of life.

Mercury (communications, electronics) remains retrograde until November 3, and it will likely affect the election. It’s difficult to work with electronics and find clarity when Mercury is indirect. Additionally, Mercury squares Jupiter (expansion), Saturn (karma, limitation) and Pluto (subconscious, transformation). Mercury square (tension) Jupiter can bring optimism and the ability for long-term planning. It can also heighten restlessness and impracticality. Mercury square Saturn relates to increases negative feelings of isolation and worry. Mercury square Pluto stimulates deep thinking and the desire to realize greater truth.

Venus (feminine, love, relationships) is beautifully placed in Libra, an air sign. Venus in Libra heightens our appreciation for beauty and art; it increases the ability to create harmonious relationships. Venus trines (harmonious) Saturn (limitation, karma), bringing stability, balance, and stability to love relationships. (This is a wonderful aspect for this particular chart!)

Mars in Aries continues in its retrograde until November 13. In the last weeks of Mars retrograde, our physical energy tends to decline. Mars retrograde in Aries pulls on our physical energy, and it may create layers of repressed anger and frustration. Mars squares Jupiter (expansion), Saturn (limitation), and Pluto (subconscious, transformation). Mars square Jupiter sometimes acts as a motivating force, pushing plans to action. Mars square Saturn brings frustration and inhibition. Mars square Pluto can give an intense desire to overcome limitations and increased drive. (On the level of collective consciousness, it can cause frustration, violence, or ruthlessness.)

The squares between Jupiter, Saturn, and Pluto, which influence the current world structure and transition, remain in place as we move through a profound series of changes, which can lead to positive or negative transformation on the collective level.

Many aspects are found in the chart, which can cause tiredness, agitation, or nervousness, through the first week of November. However, there are also aspects that aid in seeing beauty, grounding energy, and finding the inner self. It’s best to pull into meditation, stillness, and higher frequencies whenever possible. It’s how we send light and positive change to the current chaos while maintaining our center and continuing with spiritual growth. (It also protects us from the outer energies of the world.)

  1. It’s a feminine chart with many signs in water and earth, which can help with grounding and inner flow, but more challenging aspects dictate a considerable effort with flow and focus of consciousness.
  2. Many aspects cause conflicting and sudden emotion. When we feel emotional, realize it’s temporary. Avoid arguments and talk later when the energy is calmer.
  3. Mercury (communications) in retrograde confuses the mind, electronics, and travel. The Sun’s opposition with Uranus heightens it. On the positive, there’s only another week of the retrograde.
  4. Sun (life) trine Neptune (mysticism) is a lovely, supportive influence that can connect us to divine forces and insights. Venus (love, relationships) is in Libra, accentuating the beauty in life, and Venus’s trine with Saturn stabilizes relationships.
  5. Mars retrograde in Aries can bring tiredness, agitation, and anger. It can help in pushing through blocks and completing projects.
  6. It’s helpful to know the aspects and their influences are only temporary, and many feelings and emotions are transitory.

Astrological Update: November 2011

Around Halloween the sun falls into Scorpio—a dark, mysterious water sign ruling the occult, change of fortune, death and rebirth—until almost Thanksgiving. The full moon is currently in the feminine sign of Taurus and directly in opposition to the sun. Taurus is ruled by Venus, and Scorpio is ruled by Mars. The two signs clash in the darkness of feminine energy, speaking to our internal barometer about transformation/change and grounding/sameness.

Safety lies in the repetition of homely tasks; it speaks of the comfort of the sofa and the unchanging face of the day, which holds “life” in place. Transformation comes bearing gifts – new vistas, sights and sounds – for the traveler when beckoned.  The co-ordination of the two impulses, as a dual urge, best describes the sun/moon positioning. (It’s easy to feel confused when the planets take this position.)

The quest and question are not new. Enlightenment is never easy, but the rewards outweigh the drawbacks–if we carefully calculate risk of traveling into the next dimension of experience. Mercury and Venus sit sweetly in Sagittarius, the fire sign of adventure, religion and philosophy, encouraging our voyage toward expansion. The exact conjunction also unites head and heart, encouraging forward motion with faith in one hand and a map in the other. Think of it as the passionate movement of the heart coupled with the good sense of logical thought.

Mars in Leo widely formed a trine Venus and Mars, amplifying and harmonizing the fiery urge for forward motion. Change comes today when Mars moves into Virgo, a discriminating earth sign, and moves into the placement for months, through July 2012.

Jupiter sits in Taurus on a beneficent degree, encouraging grounding or delving into the earth’s energies as a guidepost on the spiritual journey. Uranus and Saturn continue to counter one another in Aries and Libra, as a battle between the old and new gods. As in Greek Mythology, Cronus (Saturn) and Uranus continue to exchange blows, as the old world structure struggles for maintenance of the status quo and the new world ideology demands change. (It’s best to visualize a balanced, happy world—remember change follows thought and emotion.)

Chiron, the wounded healer, is placed in Pisces, so perhaps we continue to heal the world’s wounds from the Piscean age.  Neptune in Uranus encourages taking a more active role in the community at large or emerging from the struggle of one’s past. Pluto in Capricorn speaks of the old social order for collective consciousness and following through the darkness toward the light.

Ultimately, the stars illuminate a pattern of change, a movement toward an unseen path of light. Our patterns of repetition and drama are the darkness through which we move. Our hearts read the chorus of directions, as sent by the angels—and we listen best with hearts and minds conjoined.

Mercury goes indirect on November 23-December 13, which will affect travel plans for Thanksgiving and shopping expeditions. (Double-check reservations, suitcases and leave earlier than usual. Communication errors are common during Mercury retrograde.)
